Driving in Thailand on an International Driving Permit works for 90 days. After that, insurance companies and police expect a Thai license, especially if you rent a motorbike or car long-term. This guide covers both routes: converting a license you already hold, and getting one from scratch.

Do you need a Thai driver's license?
Staying past a tourist trip and planning to ride or drive regularly? Get one. A Thai license covers you in four ways:
- Insurance pays out after an accident
- Police checkpoints accept it as local ID
- It replaces an expired International Driving Permit
- It works as everyday ID in Thailand
Path 1: Convert your foreign license to a Thai license
Already hold a valid license from home? Convert it instead of testing from scratch. Most long-term expats take this route because it's faster.
Documents you'll need
- Passport (original + copy)
- Valid visa (Non-Immigrant O, B, or a similar long-stay category)
- Existing driver's license, valid for at least 6 months
- Residence Certificate (from Immigration or your embassy)
- TM30 confirmation (proof of your registered address)
- Medical certificate (issued within 30 days, available same-day at most Thai hospitals and clinics)
- Passport-sized photos

The process
- Get your Residence Certificate. This proves your Thai address to the Department of Land Transport (DLT). Get it from Thai Immigration directly, or through your embassy if Immigration is backed up.
- Get a medical certificate. Any general hospital or clinic in Bangkok issues these same-day for a small fee. A doctor confirms you're fit to drive.
- Take a vision and reaction test at the DLT. The DLT handles this on-site in a few minutes.
- Submit your documents at the DLT office. Staff review your foreign license, passport, visa, residence certificate, and medical certificate.
- Receive a temporary 2-year Thai license. After 2 years you can upgrade it to a 5-year license.
Timeline and cost
Most conversions finish same-day at the DLT once you have the paperwork. The bottleneck is gathering documents beforehand, especially the Residence Certificate. Government fees are modest. Budget separately for the medical certificate and, if your license isn't in English or Thai, a translation.

Path 2: Acquire a Thai license from scratch
No valid foreign license, or yours doesn't qualify for conversion? You'll go through the standard Thai license process.
What's involved
- The same base documents as above (passport, visa, residence certificate, medical certificate)
- A written exam (available in English at Bangkok DLT offices)
- A practical driving test (motorbike: cone and slalom course; car: basic maneuvering test)
This route takes longer. Plan on a couple of DLT visits to pass the written and practical exams.
Motorbike vs. car license
Apply for a motorbike license, a car license, or both in the same visit. Doing both together saves you a second round of paperwork and queueing.
Common mistakes that slow the process down
- Showing up without a Residence Certificate. This is the document most foreigners forget, and DLT staff turn you away without it.
- Medical certificate older than 30 days. Get it right before your DLT appointment, not weeks in advance.
- Visa type issues. A tourist visa won't qualify you for a Thai license. You need a longer-stay visa category. Not sure which one applies to you? Email us.
- Untranslated foreign license. If your license isn't in English or Thai, it needs an official translation before the DLT will accept it.

Can I drive in Thailand on my home country's license? Only with a valid International Driving Permit (IDP), for your first 90 days in the country as a visitor.
How long is a Thai driver's license valid? Your first license is valid for 2 years. After that, you can renew it for a 5-year license.
Can I convert a US/UK/Australian license directly? Yes. Most countries' licenses convert directly at the DLT if you have the correct visa and supporting documents. A handful of license types require the written and practical test instead. The DLT tells you this at submission.
Do I need to speak Thai? No. Bangkok DLT offices offer the written exam in English, and English-speaking staff are usually on hand. Wait times and process clarity improve with local help.
What if my visa is close to expiring? You need a valid, current visa at the time of application. Sort out your visa status first. The DLT won't issue a license without one reflected in your paperwork.
